Cape Bowling Green Potential

A recent spate of small blacks at the (now) famous billfish grounds off Townville at Cape Bowling Green have us holding high hopes for the season ahead. Since early May, Townsville Game Fish Club members have already been catching a number of blacks - in the small to teeny range - although the weather has stopped much of the fleet from getting out as often as they would like. Typically these smaller fish caught early during May/June indicate a nice run of larger blacks (with full bellies after a season on the grounds) ahead once the season is full underway in August and September. And we are very much looking forward to that!Cape Bowling Green is now known as one of the premier spots across the globe for light-tackle marlin fishing. But is wasn't always that way. After many moons fishing amongst the many reefs off Townsville, it wasn't until the early 80's that the CBG grounds were 'discovered' - and it wasn't originally a marlin fishery either. It was conversations fishing at Cape Moreton that put the idea in Capt. Jim's mind at least. Jeff Ferguson and Bill Edwards telling of similar (to those at Cape Moreton) bait congregations in forming at CBG area that they had noticed on their yearly sojourns north for the heavy tackle season. Without the time or inclination to investigate further they nevertheless planted a seed. Finally, in 1983, opportunity struck on the return from fishing the Whitsunday tournament with both Capt. Jim and mate Calvin Tilley detirmined to take some time to check it out. Although that day was pretty uneventful, Calvin did manage to hook a sailfish which they fought for over 4 hours (before losing it). It was enough to spark the thought - we should come back here. And so they did. At the next available opportunity Capt Jim took the ol' Shark Cat Jac-Kel down for another look. The place was thick with sails. Saturday, they saw them all over the place but didn't catch a single one. Re-gathering behind the spit that night, and maybe fine-tuning the game plan, they had more luck on Sunday, catching a few fish. Word spread amongst the always enthusiastic TGFC members and soon they were all trying their luck. A sailfish haul aboard Chenoa in the 80's, and Mike Levitt's 21.3kg black marlin on 1kg line. From that time, Cape Bowling Green was put on the map and people came from all over the world to fish there. While mostly sails, there were a few small marlin creeping in as well. Capt. Luke took early honours as the first person to catch a billfish in a Townsville Tournament in 1984 (at the ripe old age of 14), and it was a marlin. A world record on 4kg that stood for a mere 24 hours before OB Junior (Leigh) caught one bigger the very next day. Since that day, literally 10's of thousands of billfish have been released at CBG. In 1985, Anne Dalling became the first woman in the world to catch a black marlin on 1kg line. And Mike Levitt, the famous light-tackle angler later made the trip himself and landed a much sort after world record after a mere 2 hours of fishing. Capt. Luke's logs as a deckhand on board Jac-Kel with Capt Jim show that for their 3 month season in 1987 - fishing for 70 days - they averaged 8 fish a day with a ratio of 3 to 1, sailfish to marlin. Within a year though, it had all changed. From 1987, the sailfish started to slacken off and the great numbers have since disappeared. Since then it has been mainly marlin, and in great numbers. With the decline of the sails, the sardines and annoying long tom's have mostly gone with them. And the schools of hundreds of dolphins that you used to see have gone as well. But the bait is not all gone. In fact, the single best peice of advice anyone gives with regard to fishing at CBG is to find the bait, and you'll find the fish. Huge schools of yakkas and pilchards still plague the area and the juvenile black marlin set up camp around these schools from May to October, litterally putting on up to 10kgs a season. A 10kg marlin may double his weight by the time the September tournament rolls around. There have also been a few big ones thrown into the mix - who can forget Utopia's 800lb-er during the tournament in 2006. A haven for juvenile billfish, sails and black marlin alike. And Anne's 1kg world record, an 11kg black. Those in the know have observed the particularly good years versus the not-so over time. The stand out year being 1996 (a 32 black marlin day on board Orca with Capt Jim, a 36 day on board Assegai with Capt Greg 'Muddy' Edwards). 2006 wasn't too bad either. Let's hope that 2008 registers on the list. The indications are good, and I know a few captains who can't wait to get there and check it out in person.Read about what's new on the BMFB here.

Saturday's weather was not looking too favourable, and being a little late in the season for a guaranteed marlin bite, Capt. Luke decided to hunt down the cobia instead. With the influx of whales along the the Gold Coast in particular, in the last two weeks, the cobia were sure to be hot on their heels. And they were. Russell Gage ('Gagey') who runs the 58" Viking, Too Easy, brought along his special black book of spots and number 584 worked a real treat.Capt Luke said the whales were as thick as he's ever seen them - must be no wonder the new Sea World whale watching venture seems to be going very well! It wasn't long after putting down the first live baits that they were on and it continued that way for the rest of the day with the boys from Volvo going home with a few eskies of fish between them. The fish ranged from 40-80lbs and the boys took home enough for a feed, releasing the rest.

Pending World Record for Gary Carter, a 357lb Atlantic Blue on 6lb line on June 4 in LaGomera, Canary Islands. Capt. Luke received the good news from Gary this morning. Gary is, and is renowned as one of the most skilled light tackle anglers in the world. He puts in more sea time than I can ever dream about. With his home base in Costa Rica, he fishes regularly on his own boat, a 45" G&S Silver-Rod-O, and he's also fished in locations all over the world. I was one board with Gary and Capt. Luke when he chased the Pacific version of the same record here last year, putting in a few nice long fights on the trip. Gary has fished with Luke for over 3 years. Last time we had him on board was the day of 9 hours on a 900+ lb-er off Lena Reef on 16lb late last year.Big congratulations to Gary and team from all of us on another amazing feat.

A tad delayed... but some shots from the AIBT. POB on a deep dark mystery and Leigh and team with our only point scoring fish. On the whole, fishing was slow. I believe from 29 boats, there were just the 5 Billfish released over the two days. Champion Team went to the guys on board Port Stephens boat Diversion. On board Reel Chase our team were the top point scorers from TGFC and we had a ball regardless of the fishing! This weekend sees the re-scheduled (due to bad weather) Gold Coast GFC Cabo Blue Marlin Classic. Looking forward to hearing how that goes. A few boats that I heard went out over the last weekend did get a few strikes so hopefully that will also be the case this weekend. The 17/18th weekend also sees the inaugural Stebercraft Blue Marlin Classic at Foster/Tuncurry. If you have any reports from either of these comps, don't hesitate to send along .Capt. Luke and I are taking our annual vacation to the land of the rising sun as of tomorrow and so we will miss both. Don't feel too sorry for us though, I have the feeling we'll be getting our fishing fix and more over there! Capt. Luke gets a quick Barra fix last weekend in the Gulf.

News from Capt. Tom who has just spent another 10 days fishing south from Norfolk Island to the Wanganella Banks. Fishing 2 days initially closer to Norfolk the team found some great structure and in the two days ended up with 8 Marlin, including 3 Black Marlin (3-400lbs) and the remaining Stripeys as well as some Yellowfin to 50kg. Not a bad effort at all!

But while the fishing slowed over the moon, the last two days at Wanganella lived up to everything that we have ever heard about the fishery and more. 24 and 19 respectively - 24 Marlin being Ultimate Lady's new daily record. At one stage they fought 6 fish at once!!! This trip also marked their first Black Marlin at Wanganella, a nice one sized about 500lbs.

I hope we get to see another DVD made of this trip! :-)

Ossie Collins sent me these pics and a story of folly at a NSW Interclub. Angler Shaun hooks up a marlin and on deck, Clinton leans over to tag the fish...and misses. And drops the pole in the sea. The skipper utters some choice words at him prompting him to dive in to retrieve it. Shaun drops back the drag on the fish so it clears the back of the boat and the (now) swimmer in the water. While Clinton swims out and back, the marlin zig zags underneath (can only imagine what the marlin is thinking now). Tag pole is saved, and back in the boat and the second shot is successful and the fish is released.Ossie explains this is now why he always keeps more than one tag pole on board! Reminds me of a day last year when a decky, who shall remain nameless (okay, it was Brad ;-), gaffed a mackerel to bring it into the boat but left the gaff in fish in the water instead. We had to wind the fish, still brandishing gaff from shoulder back into arms reach to get it into the boat with a second gaff. Hee hee. Love these stories. Feel free to share!

Kekoa returned to the Car Park where they had spotted the bait balls earlier in the week and found themselves in the middle of the action. A double header straight up (two Stripeys) was followed by consistent bites throughout the day. Angler Pete O'Brien (formerly Australia's biggest boat builder but now 30kgs lighter) finished the day with a Marlin Grand Slam (Blue, Black and Stripe) as the team came home with 6 tags for the day and 7 for the tournament.Other boats in the thick of it Capt Brett on the newly appointed Assegai Gorilla (also finishing the tournament on 7 tags), Capt Tim on Born Free (tagging 5), Perry and Vanessa on Mauna Kea (tagging 3 for the day - also a Grand Slam - and hooking up again mere seconds after cease fishing), Tomo, Chris and the boys on Mojo, Capt Trent on Iona and Capt Graham on Cabo 1 stuck to his game plan releasing two Blues. The results (I believe but correct me if I'm wrong - I heard a few trophies needed to be reassigned):NSW Champion Club - Newcastle Port Stephens, NSW Champion Capture Boat - Rampage from Offshore, NSW Champion Tag & Release Boat - Gorilla. Champion Visiting Boat Tag & Release being Kekoa who also took home the Champion and Runner Up Angler (Peter and Leigh) for the Visiting Boats as well.

The weather has gone from bad to worse to okay and back to worse again. By the consensus of word on the dock, tomorrow (Saturday's fishing) looks likely to be cancelled again while Sunday looks not too bad.

Thursday saw the wild weather come through earlier than predicted and gave us a very memorable ride home. Hopefully one not to be repeated. With our team up from Sydney stuck in traffic, we got a very late start, missed the early bite (Kekoa successfully released a double-header before 9am) and only got two hours fishing in before it all went to sh!t.

Back to Wednesday which was by far the glamour day of the season (of course being our day off in Port) boats fishing the mid-week Salamander Shores tournament found the fish back down at the original car park. Listening on the radio it was all 1-1-1 and 2-2-2 each sked. Kekoa, not fishing the tourn, and Running Bear had the best day each with four fish, while numerous boats followed up with 3 and 2.

On Wednesday Kekoa reported bait balls at the car park with Striped Marlin feeding on the surface. We saw the same again Thursday - it was a great sight to see!

And on Tuesday, T-Star had a top day with their single lady angler scooping the Ladies Day tournament releasing her first, second, third and fourth Marlin!

Back North
Ultimate Lady has been doing a spot of Blue Marlin fishing from the Gold Coast down to Yamba and released 6 from 9 on Wednesday. The overnight drift unfortunately took them a good deal away from the spot in the fast current (um... 30 miles...) and trying to work their way back there on Thursday they only managed one from three.

In NZ
Reports have been good for the Blue Marlin fishing as well, big ones at that. There was a 442kg Blue weighed on the North Island as well as another two fish over 320kg.
