Capt. Kim Andersen on Reel Shock  had another top day with four from six black marlin ranging from 150lb to 500lbs.  Nearby on KEKOA we had the early mark into Cairns on changeover and finished our trip with another two smaller blacks including this fish for Scotty, his first on standup tackle (but not the last!)  That put us at 10 for the trip. Also finishing with two fish at 400 and 200lbs to make it 10 for their trip as welll, Capt. Daniel Carlson and the team on Little Audrey.

Out of Brisbane, Capt. Ken Brown’s Megumi released one from two, a nice fat blue marlin at 400lbs. Ken’s back out again today. Hopefully we’ll hear more from boats on the Sunshine and Gold Coast this weekend.

Update–more reports have come in:

Capt. Jared Weir on Shaka added another nice fish at 650lbs and another nice photo too thanks John.  I also heard from Capt. Corey Hard on Askari who tells me they returned from two days at Holmes Reef and 6 bites, 5 of which were blues on lures. Capt. Corey said one of the blues was 647lbs. Yesterday, back on the edge they went one from one at 400lbs.

I also heard from Capt. Chris Jolly who is back on Amokura and have released 6 from 10 in the last three days fishing. Capt. Chris said all the fish were small up to 400lbs. Great going!

Catching Up for the week

Well, we’re back! I think its pretty obvious that we didn’t get any telephone/internet service while we were ‘away’ so lets see if I can catch up on the last few days.

While the fishing hasn’t always been consistent, there are still a number of big fish around. Case and point Capt. Dean Beech and the team on Castille III who released three from eight on Wednesday fishing at St Crispin’s Reef at 450, 1050 and 1150lbs!! Capt. Deano said they also pulled the hooks on one about 800lbs and that all the fish were caught to first time anglers. What a day!

Adding up the numbers and BIG fish, Capt. Tim Dean on Calypso tells me they wrap up their 8 day trip today and are currently on 13 fish in 7 days which includes two fish around the 1000lb mark!! Capt. Tim says they broke another big fish off yesterday and caught one around 400lbs while jumping off another three.

I also heard from Capt. Rob Bonser on Pirate who tells me he had a great day at his local haunt on Tuesday. They started out with a 200lb-er at 2 and had a bit off a bigger fish but pulled the hook. Capt. Rob says there were big fish all lit up swimming around just surfing the waves but they didn’t get any more bites until 4:30 when they hooked up to another big girl. At 8:30pm they released her sill going strong at 1100lbs for anglers Takeo Tokuyama and Koichi Kawai. Big congrats guys!

On Wednesday, Capt. Tim Richardson on Tradition released one that he put at 950lbs for Jack. Meanwhile, after starting the trip on Sunday with a smaller fish off Spur, Capt. Daniel Carlson’s Little Audrey have been adding them steadily ever since. They released two from four on Tuesday at 250 and 350lbs, missing two larger fish around 600 and 900lbs. Wednesday, a top day with 4 from 4 at 900, 500, 400 and a 200lb-er for 14 year old Luke Rogerson, which was his first marlin. Capt. Dan says that young Luke dreams of being a crew and captain at Cairns one day and so they’ve been teaching him the ropes. On Thursday, they added another one at 350lbs to put them on 8 fish for the trip so far.

Likewise, Mistress have been producing good numbers since the start of their latest trip on Tuesday with 7 from 11 in the past three days. Tuesday they released two starting with a 300lb-er from a double header (the second bigger fish at 800lbs ate right off the rod tip but unfortunately pulled the hook shortly after). Later they added the 650lb-er and jumped another one off about the 800lb mark. Wednesday, it was 3 from 3 at 600 300 and 250lbs. Photo of Rocket on the leader of the 600lb-er which is the angler from Finland’s first marlin. Thursday, they added another two more.

On KEKOA we are 7 from 9 in the past two days fishing up on the outside. Tuesday was just window shopping marlin for us raising 5 marlin down at Myrmidon Reef (3 blues, 2 blacks), none of which would eat. We released three black marlin on Wednesday starting with the first fish at 5:30 am, just after we got underway, and we also missed a blue marlin of around 400lbs. Yesterday, Thursday, we released 4 from 5, two on standup for Brendan and the other two on conventional chair tackle for Scotty on the way back into the edge. I got some more great photos. It definitely looks like its shaping up nicely out there with plenty of bird action.

Capt. Tim Ryan on Joe Joe fished Opal Ridge on Wednesday for two at 200 and 400lbs. Capt. Ian “Wobbles” Ford on Hot Shot likewise added two from three on Monday, both around 300lbs. Capt. Jared Weir’s Shaka was back out yesterday fresh from two days off and released a small one to start them off.

Sunshine Coast: David Granville tells me the blues have finally shown up on the Sunshine Coast this week with Ymer going 2 from 4 and Watch Ya Problem 2 fm 5 on Wednesday. Thursday Watch Ya Problem was 2 from 2 and Fish Whisperer 1 from 1.

Gold Coast: Meanwhile, the blues just keep coming on the Gold Coast with Larva back on the water releasing another one yesterday.

Linden Stadium, The Return

Just a quick note–we’re traveling and may be out of internet/phone range off and on for the next few days. I’ll get reports up (and update reports) when I can but they may not be first thing in the morning as usual. I’m getting this report up now nice and early before I lose signal today but there may be more reports to add later.

Lots to report, read all the way down!

Remember last year when we coined the term “Linden Stadium”?  Well this year, once again, Linden Bank is living up to its nickname.  With the vast majority of the fleet now fishing within 3nm of each other, it’s most definitely still ‘the place you go to watch other boats catch the giant black marlin’!  Unless of course it’s your lucky day. Then everyone else gets to watch you catch them! Yesterday’s it was the boats who were watching the day before’s turn to catch them up.  And catch them up they did.

Capt. Russell Caphorn’s Kaizen finished the day with two nice fish that he put at 850lbs and the second at 1000.  I had my camera out for shot on the smaller fish, but it actually jumped so close to us that I missed it!!

Capt. Kim Anderson, who is back on the reef on board Reel Shock with Stretch on the gloves had a top day releasing three at 250, 300 and 900lbs for Anders, Johnny and Ole, all from Sweden.  Capt. Troy Dallman on Cool Runnings likewise had a great day releasing two fish at 200 and 950lbs.

Capt. Tim Dean on Calypso had a massive day releasing what he called a “giant fish” for James Norris.  Capt. Tim says it was an absolute beauty and they are having a ball!!

Kekoa black marlin

On KEKOA, we wandered away from the boats and had a big fish take a massive swipe (and miss) at the stinger before engulfing the scad. And owner Scotty Taylor was on to his biggest fish in his almost 10 years of fishing with Capt. Luke.  But Scotty’s had plenty of time in the chair and he put it to good use as she gave us some good drenching with her tail boatside.  She was released in very good condition at 950lbs+ from Capt. Luke.  We’re going for a wander further afield today.

Likewise Shaka  had the big girl up that Capt. Jared Weir put at 950lbs for angler Rich on his first day on the reef.  John says it was a present from his wife on their 25th wedding anniversary. What a way to celebrate it! And another great shot, thanks John!

Mistress returned to Port on changeover last night but not before releasing another one from one at 400lbs for Barry.  Capt. Brett and Rocket sent me this photo from the other day when Rocket got in the chair for a change.  Barry was on the tagpole and Brett says they’re not sure whether he got the tag in or not! What do you think? ;-)

Weipa

Well, the inaugural Weipa Billfish Challenge has been run and won, by you guessed it, Capt. Ben “Notso” Bright and his team on Last Cast (Ben, Kristy and Alan (Fish) Philiskirk and Jason Owen).  Ben’s team caught three (2 sails and one black) from the second place boat with two and a few boats on one tag. All together 14 boats fished the two days and released 9 between them.  Such a great effort for the very first tournament.  Hopefully it becomes the first of many.  Ben says the marlin ranged from tiny (photo of Ben with his) to about 80kg and the sailfish, well he caught his yesterday in 55 feet of water!!  It looks like conditions were picture perfect too! Full report from Ben at bottom.

Gold Coast
The blue marlin reports just keep coming. Vince on his boat Barco went one from two on Wednesday, one from one on Saturday and one from two again on Sunday.  Vince says he knows that there were also other fish caught and that with a bit of luck and effort, you can get a blue pretty consistently.  I also heard from the team on Murphy’s Law who went one from one yesterday as well at about 150lbs. They also released a nice one on Friday that they put up near the 300kg mark.  Matt says he knows of at least three other blues tagged as well.

Update: Full Weipa Billfish Tournament Report from Ben

Thanks for the report Ben which I’ve reproduced in full!

For its first year organisers limited it to locals only, with an aim to help identify the potential of the fishery and how much local enthusiasm exists with the possibility of forming a local GFC.  A tackle night was held prior to the weekend to give new comers some help with tackle, rigs techniques etc.  The weather was perfect with glassy conditions for much of the weekend.  Fishing times were 0800 to 1600 each day.
Day 1 saw the fleet spread out (all trailer boats) with the local VMR out on the water to help out with radio sked and safety etc.  We (team Last Cast) hooked a 50kg black in the first half hour and pulled the hook after 10 min.  Shortly after, we hooked a sailfish and as it was coming close to the boat, team Sea Swift Pirates called in the first sailfish!!  As the VMR was close by we called them over to get some photos of our fish.  It was hard to keep in radio contact with those to the south but mid afternoon we managed to add a baby (120cm short) black marlin to our tally.  About 1530 team Silly Billies fishing nearby called in a sailfish, and we found out later they went 1 from 4 in that last half hour!!!  At the weigh in (??) that evening it was revealed team Tag Team went 1 from 2 blacks (70kg) with stories of a few other fish seen, hooked and lost.  One team hooked up very early on a black only 800m from the fairway beacon, only to have it fall off close to the boat.
Day 2 saw a pretty slow day overall, with several boats now fishing to the north where Silly Billies raised their sails and we caught our black.  By smoko we headed inshore where bait was marked on the morning run out and found a sailfish!  Later in the afternoon a sailfish (sorry can’t remember the team name) was called in and it turns out they lost one earlier as well, and Silly Billies called in a black marlin (20kg).
Overall results were Last Cast – 3 fish (2 sails and 8kg black marlin); Silly Billies, 2 fish (sail and 20kg black marlin); Sea Swift Pirates 1 fish (sail) and 3 other boats on 1 fish.  By rough count about 25 fish were raised all together.

Pretty Steady Bite

Black marlin on reely black

It seems like there’s a pretty steady bite continuing at Linden Bank, if you’re in the right place at the right time. And a whole bunch of other fish that like to play with the baits but not eat ;-) I snapped this shot of the boys on Reelly Black on an energetic 300lb-er that Ben says this was one of a double header. Ben also says that they released one at 750lbs the day before.

Meanwhile Capt. Jared Weir on Shaka put John onto two fish at 600 and 550lbs. This one wouldn’t jump for me (below at 600lbs) but the next one did (above at 550lbs).  Thanks John, great pic!

shaka black marlin

Amokura, with Capt. Brett Thomas at the wheel while Capt. Chris makes a quick trip home, released a nice solid fish that they put at 900lbs for first time angler Simon Nipperess. Congrats to Simon!  And nearby, Capt. Tim Richardson on Tradition returned to the southern end of the reef and released a 600lb-er for Stefano for his 40th birthday. Happy Birthday Stefano!

Capt. Bretty Alty on Mistress put crew Rocket in the chair for a welcome change as he released one about 350lb and they also missed another big fish that they say would have put the previous day’s fish to shame!

Lastly, Rhino sent me another great photo as well as some video links from their last trip on Iona 2. Rhino’s already working on his season video now–can’t wait to see that!

black marlin 1100

More big fish on Linden Bank yesterday with Capt. Brett Alty reporting two for Barry and the team on Mistress including a giant they put at 1100lbs.  Barry said this was your ideal big fish because they had it to the boat in just over 4 minutes (as opposed to a recent 2 hour+ fight).

Capt. Tim Dean on Calypso had the late bite getting two on a double header and raising another nice big one.  Capt. Daniel Carlson on Little Audrey finished up their trip with a 300lb-er to make that 6 for the trip!  And Capt. Jared Weir on  Shaka added another as well (I corrected yesterday’s report in case you didn’t notice - Shaka released two in a double yesterday as well).  Update: Capt. Corey Hard on Askari jumped one off about the 800lb mark and released another at 300lbs.

Capt. Adam Jordan on Iona 2 has now said adios to the reef for 2011. After their successful trip out wide, they headed in early yesterday for the end of their Cairns season, finishing on a great high of 17 fish in the last 13 days including two granders!

Below is a photo from Rhino from their trip out wide of the two small swimming along with the 900lb-er.

On the Gold Coast, the Larva Lure boys on Murphy’s Law had another great day out on the water yesterday releasing this nice solid blue marlin.

We’re in town again and I’ve got some jobs to take care of this morning before we head out again. If I get any more reports in throughout the day, I’ll put them up!
