If you haven’t already booked for this season, get in fast because the BIG FISH season is fast approaching. Check out the boat directory pages for listings of members of the Cairns fleet.

This year, the Ladies Ribbons will be hosting their 30th anniversary tournament at the Marlin Marina on December 7.  Kay Fallon, tournament director, has asked that any boats available for charter for this year’s event to send here an email so that she may add you to the list of boats available to teams wishing to compete.

See you there!

The little black marlin are already showing up in number in the waters of the greater North Queensland, with word in particular from Townsville that they are a good mix of first and second year fish.

Off Yeppoon, Scotty Coulter has had a couple encounters as well while mackerel fishing. On Friday they spotted one tailing and then on Sunday they jumped off another on a skirted lure which had magically made its way into the spread ;-)

The light tackle tournaments are also starting to fill the calendar. Mark these two in your diaries:

  • Cairns BlueWater Billfish Tournament (With Jack Erskine Memorial) 7-10 August, 2013
  • Townsville Billfish Challenge 30 August – 3 September, 2013.

Full details in the tournament calendar.  If you have a tournament to add to the calendar, email me here with the details.

black marlin iona

Capt. Adam Jordan’s Iona 2 had Mark Berg’s Fishing Addiction crew on board this week and snared this est. 400lb black marlin off Musgrave Island off Bundeberg. The episode should air late this year so stay tuned for that. Some really great shots taken from the GoPro!

Following up from Vic Levett’s top days fishing of northern NSW last week, six boats of the Solitary Island Game Fishing Club braved somewhat marginal conditions off Coffs Harbour on Saturday for the second last pointscore of the season. Four boats encountered blues, although none stayed connected long enough to reach the tag pole, and an ugly southerly sent most scurrying for home by lunchtime.

Sunday was somewhat better, with Black and Blue and Wicked Weasel — the only boats in Australia without Mother’s Day responsibilities it seems — fishing south for a bite each. Weasel’s fish was in the heavyweight class, pounced on the long corner lure, jumped, landed on the long rigger line, broke that, then shook the hook and disappeared. Upon winding the long corner lure back in, the crew found the lost lure neatly hooked over the leader! As they say in game fishing, it’s better to be lucky than good!

Also a report from Capt. Ken Brown on Megumi fishing out of Brisbane who converted a 2-250lb striped marlin off Point Lookout for angler Glen Williams – his first marlin.
