Ladies’ First Blue Marlin

blue marlin off Cape Moreton on LUNA

Pat Skeehan kindly sent me an update from their day Saturday on the grounds wide of Cape Moreton on Mooloolaba GFC club boat Luna with Nathan Douglass on the deck and Wayne Douglas on the sticks.  Pat says that the conditions could be described as nothing short of epic.  Spending the morning amongst a huge school of pilot whales, after two afternoon lacklustre strikes they were able to get a solid hook-up on the shotgun lure for Pat’s partner Kat-Dog (I’ll have to remember that nickname for the Ladies Ribbons this year Kat!).   It was Kat’s first trip out targeting blue marlin and after a 45 minute fight on 80lb tackle Nathan managed to get the tag in on the blue they estimated at approximately 200kgs which was released in excellent condition. Pat says that Kat was still recovering yesterday but they were unable to wipe the smile off her face. Congrats Kat on your first marlin (photo)!

Meanwhile, another first blue marlin report from Nick Currey on Aluhra from Saturday as well who went 1-1-1 east of Point Lookout for Sophie Currey – her first blue which they put at about 270lb on 24kg standup in the same perfect sea conditions.

More Cape Moreton Blue Marlin

Ben Steer sent me a late report from last Sunday/Monday off Cape Moreton.  Ben was out with skipper Shane (Steer) on board onboard Incoming.  On Sunday they went 1-1-1 on a blue marlin that Shane put at well over 600lbs and had another up the had a go at 4 different lures but wouldn’t hook up. Back out again on Monday they converted three blues (3-3-3) between 280 and 400lbs as well as a nice dolphin fish.  One of the blues was a first ever  billfish for angler Wendy Steer.  Two other boats fishing as well including Hard’n'up skippered by Russel Fairy went 1-1-1 on a blue that he put at over 200kg while Compromise, skippered by Peter Fenwick also went 1-1-1 on a blue that he put at around 150kg.

Thursday Bites Reports

A few reports of the billed creatures over the past few days have come in.

Firstly Capt. Adam Jodan on Iona 2 is heading up north for his other business and will hopefully be taking advantage of the early season juvenile black marlin fishing very soon. Before departing what I hear is a very cool Port Stephens (multiple layers the go in the tower!), he headed out on Monday for a 90kg striped marlin for boys from the John Holland Group. Adam says there a still fish around and they would have liked to spend more time on the water but unfortunately one of the boys was a little green so they headed in early.

Also leaving the colder climate of Port Stephens and heading to the warmth of Fiji is Capt. George Trinkler. George says they have had a cancellation from July 2nd to 6th which is prime time for everything at Kadavu Island. While internet access is very limited over there, we look forward to the reports coming in with the season starting in just over a week.

The Fiji Islands Classic is being held from Port Denarau on July 12th to 15th, and usually has plenty of sailfish and a few marlin released. Opulence also does day trips from Denarau during July as this is the most popular time of year to visit Fiji. Contact George to book.

Up in SEQ, just a couple of reports – Aluhra fished out at the 350-400m line off Point Lookout with a 2-3m SE swell in 25.3 degree water. Nick reports the first blue marlin about 350lb took a 12″ Lava blue lure and trashed the ocean for 10 minutes before throwing it. Soon after another fish about same size charged the boat and spat the lure again. The consolation prize was an 18kg dolphin fish.

Meanwhile fishing of Fraser Island, Cjig went 1 from 2 on the blue marlin yesterday (photo above).  Grant says that the reddie fishing has also been red hot!

Marlin Footage Tuesday

Anthony has sent me some footage from his little black marlin at Bowling Green on the weekend.  Filmed on the Sheleft HD Video sunglasses (though for stealth, I think its obvious he’s re-filmed from the TV to edit for youtube) it definitely shows just how lively these little guys are. Jumping all over and spending more time out of the water than in.

Two more clips you can watch are here and here. Anthony has kindly muted the clips to protect sensitive ears from the exciting language used ;-)

Also, here is the marlin video clip from Daniel on board Gale Force last week during their win at the Port Hacking 100. You can see just how rough it was and the water in the cockpit!

And while we’re doing videos, here’s a video that Capt. Tim Richardson on Tradition shot of Askari with Capt. Corey Hard onto a real nice big black marlin during the Lizard Island Tournament last year that they fought right next to him.
